Attack dogs are used in conjunction with tracking dogs. The breed used for this is the Belgian Malinois and/or a mix of Belgian Malinois. In most pictures we were asked to cover the faces of the K9 Unit Rangers. They are targeted by poachers living in their communities. Their lives and the lives of their families are in constant danger, and yet they have a passion for what they do - to conserve and protect wildlife.
GAT Foundation members hands-on behind the scenes
Two kinds of dogs are used.
One breed for a cold trail and another breed for a hot trail. A cold trail is older than 24 hours. For a cold trail they use the Blood Hound or similar breeds. If the trail is hot, they use Blue Tick Hounds or a mix of the Blue Tick breeds.

We posted a video of the Blue Tick tracking “poachers”. Not in the video is the attack/strike dogs behind us and the rangers, heavily armed. These videos are just a simulation of the dogs training and the Wildlife Rangers immobilization. The videos below are just for training purposes.
In the video below, this puppy is used (training) to sniff out cocaine and a bullet. The sniffing dogs are trained to detect drugs, ivories, rhino horn, arms and ammunition. The pup in the video is a mix between a German Sheppard and a Black Lab.
